Christopher Parrott Edgar Degas excelled at depicting many aspects of Parisian life in the late nineteenth century, but no subject captured his interest like the ballet dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet. In paintings, drawings, pastels, and sculptures, Degas combined classical discipline with radical experimentation in composition, color, and perspective in his dance-inspired works. Ranging from on-stage performances to backstage rehearsals and moments of quiet fatigue, his dancers reveal the tension between beauty and labor, art and reality.
