This server is perfect for businesses of all sizes This 2U rackmount server has two chassis options to choose from: 8 Bay SFF and 16 Bay SFF. 8 Bay SFF The 8 Bay SFF chassis for the PowerEdge R830 can accept up to eight 2.5" SAS/SATA hard drives or solid-state drives. This server supports hot-swap drives meaning the drives can be added or removed while the system is powered on. The rear of the 8 Bay SFF chassis includes one type A USB 2.0 port, one type A USB 3.0 port, a network daughter card slot, a serial connector, a VGA port, a dedicated iDRAC LAN port, four full-height PCIe slots, three low-profile PCIe slots, and two hot-swap power supply bays. 16 Bay SFF Hot-swap The 16 Bay SFF chassis is identical to the 8 Bay SFF chassis, except for the drive bays layout. The R830's 16 Bay SFF chassis accepts up to sixteen 2.5" SAS/SATA hot-swap hard drives and solid-state drives. The chassis rear includes one type A USB 2.0 port, one type A USB 3.0 port, a network daughter card slot, a serial connector, a VGA port, a dedicated iDRAC LAN port, four full-height PCIe slots, three low-profile PCIe slots, and two hot-swap power supply bays. Processing Power The Dell PowerEdge R830 server has a max of four LGA2011-3 CPU sockets and supports Intel Xeon E5-4600 v4 series processors. In order to get up to four processors, you must have an expansion riser board installed. A maximum of 22 CPU cores per processor is supported. This means that a total of 88 cores can be achieved. It is important to not mix memory types. Doing so can lead to unwanted issues such as boot failure. Supported Memory Capacities Modules capacities of 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB. One thing to note is that 64GB and 128GB modules are only available as LRDIMMs. With LRDIMMs, you can achieve an overall greater RAM capacity when compared to RDIMMs. Max Configurations With ECC Registered, the max RAM you can achieve is 1.5TB via 48 x 32GB DDR4 modules. With Load Reduced memory, 6.1TB can be reach via a configuration of 48 x 128GB DDR4 modules. Supported Memory Speeds The Dell PowerEdge R830 supports module speeds of 2133MT/s and 2400MT/s. 2666MT/s modules can be installed as well, but the E5-4600v4 processor series clocks down 2666MT/s modules. The fastest speed that the installed modules can run at will be determined by the processor that is installed. If you installed a module with a speed that is higher than the maximum supported speed, that module will clock down to the max speed. For example, if your system has a max speed of 2133MT/s, and you install a 2400MT/s module, the module will clock down to 2133MT/s. Storage The Dell PowerEdge R830 only has support for 2.5" SAS/SATA hard drives or solid state drives. There is not LFF (3.5") chassis option for the R830. The 8 Bay SFF chassis accepts up to eight 2.5" SAS/SATA drives while the 16 Bay SFF chassis accepts up to sixteen 2.5" SAS/SATA drives. Both chassis have hot-swap drives, meaning that drives can be added or removed while the server is powered on. Each power supply option is hot-swap. There are two hot-swap power supply bays on the R830's rear, which allows for up to two power supply units to be plugged in at once. If you install two power supplies, the wattages of the units must be matching. Utilizing two power supplies allows for redundancy, so if one unit fails, the other unit will take over, keeping the server powered on. Hot-swap power supplies can be installed or removed while the system is powered on, as long as one unit remains plugged into the server. RAID Options The Dell PowerEdge R830 has support for Mini Monolithic and PCIe RAID controllers. Mini mono RAID controllers have a dedicated spot of the motherboard that the card is installed. PCIe RAID controllers will take up one of your PCIe slots, but this is not an issue with the R830, since there is 7 total PCIe slots. To give the R830 internet access, you will need to install a Network Daughter Card (NDC) or a PCIe Network Card. Daughter cards have a spot on the motherboard that are designed only for daughter cards. We recommend going with a daughter card since it does not take up any PCIe slots.
