Do you remember a place you were certain would always be there...until one day it wasn't? Once standing along a remote highway in Desert Center, California, the Desert Center Cafe was a roadside landmark built in the 1920s. After decades of welcoming travelers, it was abandoned and eventually disappeared altogether. I visited the site years before it was lost, and the quiet stillness of the desert and that empty building stayed with me. The California desert has long been part of my life. We had a home in nearby La Quinta for many years, and this piece became my way of preserving a place that now exists only in memory. Rather than focus on decay, I chose to capture a moment suspended in time-the brilliant blue sky, long afternoon shadows, and the unmistakable feeling that countless travelers had once stopped here. Though the building now is gone, it's story lives on through the memories of those who passed it's doors. This work is a tribute to the vanishing roadside landmarks of the American West and to the quiet beauty, history, and solitude of the desert. Desert Center Cafe received an Honorable Mention in Teravarna's 11th Landscape International Juried Art Competition.
