About the artist Valma Nakamarra White Valma Nakamarra White was born in Alice Springs and grew up in Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community approximately 290 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs. She comes from a distinguished family of artists. Her mother, Sabrina Napangardi Granites, and grandmother, Alma Nungarrayi Granites, are established artists whose work has been exhibited in Australia and internationally. From an early age, Valma listened to her family’s Jukurrpa stories and watched them paint. Valma began painting with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, an Aboriginal-owned and governed art centre in Yuendumu, in 2013. She paints her father’s Warna Jukurrpa, associated with Mijirlparnta, or Mission Creek.
