About the DFS 230 – Assault Glider: At its core the DFS 230 was an excellent way to counter the negative effect of scattered paratroopers during airdrop missions. Its first use came in May of 1940 during the German invasion of Belgium. The Belgian fort of Eben Emael guarded by 800 men, and protected by a moat, tank barricades, mine fields, machine gun nests, and heavy artillery stood in the way of the German advance. The fort’s roof, however, was a camouflaged 1,000-yard expanse made to look like a meadow – a perfect place for the gliders to land. A total of ten DFS gliders carrying 78 troops landed on the top of the Belgian fort. Just 20 minutes later the Germans had sealed the Belgian troops inside the fort, which was surrendered the following day. Specifications: Crew: 1 + 9 soldiersEmpty weight: 770 kg.
