DEP is one of the longest used fragrance diluents due to the fact that it is able to dissolve more perfumery materials than any other single solvent. It is also colourless, odourless and does not develop off notes — problems which can plague other diluents. Despite its long-standing use and safety (attested to by having no IFRA restriction and no EU restriction in cosmetic and fragrance use), many industries are shifting toward non-phthalate alternatives due to regulatory and consumer preferences. Always check regional compliance and consider testing alternatives like triethyl citrate (TEC) or dipropylene glycol (DPG) for specific applications. DEP is Miscible with alcohol and oils but insoluble in water.
