Lee Stewart is a self-taught artist born and raised in Kashechewan, a remote First Nations community on James Bay in Northern Ontario, and now based in Kingston. He studied Film and Art History at Carleton University in Ottawa, an influence that continues to shape the narrative quality of his work. The Pendleton Landscapes series takes inspiration from the bold stripes and graphic quality of Pendleton blankets, beginning with their immediate visual impact and extending into the deeper cultural histories they carry. For the artist, these forms hold both universal appeal and a personal connection to Indigenous culture, story, and historical context. Reworked through a digital, glitch-like language, the series becomes both homage and reclamation. Familiar blanket patterns are transformed into contemporary abstractions, where bands of color and horizon-like forms suggest sunlight breaking across the landscape. The result is work that carries inherited visual language forward while opening it into a new space of reflection and renewal.
