His father married the actress Supriya Pathak. He has a brother Ruhan and sister Sana as well as a step-brother Ishaan Kapoor. Shahid is a fabulous dancer owing to the training he undertook at Shiamak Davar Institute for the Performing Arts. He was a background dancer in Subash Ghai s 1998 release Taal.
