A 20th century Hereke rug from south west Anatolia. The woven "Hereke" inscription at one end and the attached woven tab with the number 5399 show that this was produced at the Nat ional Manufactory. Commercial rug production began in Hereke in about 1843 with the establishment of court weaving workshops. From the beginning, the weaving was of the highest quality with asymmetric dense knotting. True to the tradition, the rug is finely woven with a soft pile. The unusual colour scheme is constructed of soft pink, pale and dark blue with a subtle pale amber. The design is sophisticated and the key motifs in the border have almost a Chinese feel. Good condition. 230 x 139cm Show more
