From seasonally dry regions of Ecuador and Brazil, Dioscorea discolor has probably some of the most ornate foliage of the genus. In spring, this plant produces a long vine of gener ously proportioned cordate (heart-shaped) leaves, intricately patterned with deep tones of maroon and green and covered with a velvety surface that catches a silver sheen in light. It is probably the only member of the genus grown for its leaves, and not its tuber/caudex. This plant does extremely well as a houseplant, but can also be grown outdoors, as long as it is kept dry while dormant when the leaves die back to an underground tuber that can’t be raised like other Dioscorea.
