The flowers are dioecious, with male and female flowers produced on separate plants. The male flowers grow in erect racemes, while the female flowers grow in spinescent spikes. They emerge on long, slender stalks from the Dioscorea elephantipes caudex, making this plant even more enchanting. The Dioscorea elephantipes is known to have mild toxicity for humans and pets if ingested, due to the presence of saponins.
