Michael Abrams left school and spent a decade driving forklifts while working evenings as a freelance greeting card artist. By 1990 he had built a sufficient following to go full time, and has since exhibited in New York and designed a ceramics range for Wedgwood. His gallery work encompasses two quite different registers: the Bod series of boldly characterful originals, and the warmly comic Ted and Rose figures — a bowler-hatted pair inspired by Magritte and dressed in the elegance of Downton Abbey. Dippy Egg and Soldiers is an original work — unique, hand-painted, and irreplicable. At £1,695 it is one of the more substantial pieces in the range.
