Ice age America belonged to a heavier wolf. Aenocyon dirus stood about as tall as a grey wolf but carried more bone, a broader head and stronger teeth, and it hunted across the continent until roughly thirteen thousand years ago. Genetic work published in 2021 placed it on a branch of its own, a distant relation of the wolves alive today rather than a close cousin.
