Mia could hear the squawks of her Jarriny before she saw them—those familiar cries grounding her even as she adjusted to a world far from home. In Dirrarn, we follow Mia’s continued journey from the acclaimed book Black Cockatoo, as she learns to navigate life at boarding school. Living hundreds of kilometres from her family and the vast sky country she calls home, Mia grapples with new surroundings, shifting friendships, and the complex feelings that arise from being caught between two worlds. With the support of her best friend Naya, Mia begins to confront challenges that force her to question where she belongs and what it means to speak her truth. The black cockatoo, or dirrarn—Mia’s totemic bird—becomes her guide, symbolising strength, resilience, and the importance of staying grounded in culture and identity. This sensitive and beautifully written story explores themes of connection to place, personal growth, and the power of cultural knowledge.
