We are fed illusions all the time. "Republicans are backwards and racist." "Democrats hate America." "Conservatives only care about themselves." "Liberals want to destroy our insti tutions." "Trump supporters are delusional." "Anyone who doesn't vote for Trump is a communist." "The Republican Party is a cult." Blanket generalizations that demonize the "other" side have become so widespread that they are part of people's daily conversations. The more you hear a message, the truer it sounds. One of the many benefits of being a moderate, centrist, and independent is that these messages have far less impact on people who don't subscribe to identity politics. They're further removed, they've unplugged, and they don't engage in hateful, divisive rhetoric. The illusions are not internalized.
