Eau de Parfum With Distant Love, Dominique Ropion has created a fascinating and enigmatic perfume for Aromag, centred around a fugitive rose, made elusive yet somehow strangely present by the use of grape leaves, wrapping the rosaceous vapours in sun-warmed vines, astringent foliage, new mown grass and the odour of unripe grape skins that becomes more pronounced as Distant Love warms up on skin. Ropion's grape leaf accord carries a tannic, astringent edge that expertly counterpoints the rose. Distant Love is about balance and the shimmering veil through which we view love. One moment it is everything, all-consuming, a violent rose of desire, then it shifts focus and we sense its presence only at the edges of our vision. This elusiveness is enabled by a beautiful note of orris, its bruised powdery nature creating a lipstick-enhanced tissue of nostalgic allure. Orange blossom in the top notes and patchouli and vetiver in the base bookend the captivating drama of Ropion's rose, demonstrating once again his never-ending capacity to echo back and forth through time and offer us another nuanced portrait of the magnificent rose.
