The packing paper that makes up this basket safely held our belongings on a ship across the Atlantic. The buoy shape, initially suggested by the thrifted wooden bowl, is a nod to its journey, and to the at-sea feeling of landing in a new country during the pandemic. I flattened, twisted, and braided the paper before coiling the braid around a form and stitching it in place with thick waxed cotton thread. The woven top is stitched into holes drilled into a recessed lip in the bowl. This paper will continue to deepen in color through exposure to light. The diving bell shape, initially suggested by the found bamboo rings, is a nod to its journey, and to the underwater feeling of landing in a new country during the pandemic. I flattened, twisted, and braided the paper before coiling the braid around a form (my landlady's flower pot) and stitching it in place with thick waxed cotton thread.
