DL-Acetyl Methionine Injection acts to detoxify the liver. LIVER PROTECTANT: An early study in horses confirmed methionine administered prior to or within 2 or 4 hours after exposure to a liver toxic agent (chloroform) protected the liver from injury. Methionine by injection should prove useful to protect the liver against certain types ofinjuries and aids organ repair. Several other reports indicate methionine, an essential amino acid, assists in the breakdown of fats in the liver (fatty liver disease – cattle). Also it detoxifies the liver and the body of heavy metals. DL Methionine protects tissue from free-radical damage. As a lipotropic agent, it plays a fundamental role in healthy liver function. It has antioxidant activity, protects the liver and lympathatic system and other tissues throughout the body against free-radical damage. A recent report indicates methionine exerts an antioxidant effect although the mechanism is yet unidentified. The findings of this study demonstrate that methionine reduces free-radical formation inendothelial cells. This novel, indirect antioxidant action might be relevant for prevention of inflammation and oxidative stress. Methionine is not synthesised by the body and must be supplemented.
