Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA 4Pk is an extreme American Imperial IPA brewed to 15–20% ABV and sold as a four-pack of 12 oz bottles. Scoring 92 on BeerAdvocate across nearly 9,000 ratings, this limited-release beer stands as one of the most ambitious and intensely hopped IPAs commercially available. Quick Facts: ABV: 15–20% | IBU: 120 | Origin: Milton, Delaware | Style: American Imperial IPA | Brewery: Dogfish Head Craft Brewery Production & Heritage Dogfish Head Craft Brewery was founded in 1995 by Sam Calagione in Milton, Delaware, and merged with The Boston Beer Company in 2019. The 120 Minute IPA starts with a wort brewed to a colossal 45-degree Plato and undergoes a continuous hopping process throughout its full two-hour boil using high-alpha American hop varieties. After the boil and whirlpool, the beer is dry-hopped daily in the fermenter for an entire month, then aged for an additional month on whole-leaf hops — a production timeline that dwarfs nearly any other IPA on the market. The result registers at roughly 120 IBUs and achieves wine-strength alcohol levels, placing it in rare territory between beer and barleywine. Tasting Notes Aroma: Intense caramel malt and stone fruit lead the nose, followed by layers of apricot, papaya, and wild honey. Slightly resinous pine hops emerge underneath, with only a faint suggestion of the considerable alcohol content. Taste: The entry is thick and sweet with ripe pineapple, mango, and apricot flavors carried by a substantial malt backbone. Mid-palate, the hop bitterness builds steadily but never overwhelms, balanced by a rich caramel sweetness. Tropical fruit and orange blossom honey linger as the malt and hops find equilibrium. Finish: Long and warming, with moderate bitterness giving way to residual sweetness and dried stone fruit. The finish recalls a fine barleywine — honeyed, complex, and gently boozy. How to Drink 120 Minute IPA This beer is best enjoyed at cellar temperature, around 50–55°F, in a tulip glass or snifter that concentrates its complex aromatics. Sipping slowly is essential; the high ABV rewards patience the way a strong barleywine or Belgian quad does. Given its intensity, 120 Minute IPA is not a conventional cocktail ingredient, but adventurous drinkers use it in a Beer-garita (substituting a splash for triple sec alongside tequila and lime), a Hop Drop 'n Roll Shandy (blended with fresh-squeezed citrus juice and a touch of simple syrup to tame the heat), or a Beer Float paired with vanilla bean ice cream, where the caramel malt and tropical hop notes play beautifully against the cream. Best For Gifting a craft beer enthusiast who collects limited-release brews Vertical cellaring alongside vintages from prior years to compare aging development Pairing with a rich dessert course at a dinner party Splitting with friends as an after-dinner sipper on a special occasion Frequently Asked Questions What does 120 Minute IPA taste like? 120 Minute IPA delivers an intensely sweet, malty base layered with tropical stone fruit — apricot, mango, and pineapple — balanced by moderate hop bitterness and a warming, honeyed finish. The flavor profile sits closer to a hoppy American barleywine than a typical IPA. How does 120 Minute IPA compare to Samuel Adams Utopias? Both are extreme high-ABV American beers released in limited quantities, but they occupy different categories: 120 Minute IPA is hop-forward with tropical fruit and pine character at 15–20% ABV, while Utopias is a blended, barrel-aged strong ale reaching 28% ABV with sherry-like and dried-fruit notes. The 120 Minute is considerably more accessible in both availability and price. Is 120 Minute IPA good for sipping neat? Yes — its wine-level alcohol and complex malt-hop interplay make it ideal for slow, contemplative sipping from a snifter or tulip glass at cellar temperature. Where is 120 Minute IPA made? 120 Minute IPA is brewed at Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton, Delaware, a coastal town on the Delmarva Peninsula where the brewery has operated since its founding in 1995. What foods pair well with 120 Minute IPA? Bold blue cheeses like Roquefort complement the malt sweetness and hop bitterness. Crème brûlée mirrors the caramel character. Grilled stone fruit desserts echo the apricot and peach aromatics. Spicy Thai curry benefits from the residual sugar cutting through the heat. Dark chocolate truffles match the intensity without being overwhelmed. What sizes does 120 Minute IPA come in? The standard retail format is a four-pack of 12 oz bottles; draft availability is extremely limited and typically reserved for special tap events. Is 120 Minute IPA worth the price? 120 Minute IPA positions as a premium, limited-release craft beer whose month-long dry-hopping schedule and additional month of aging on whole-leaf hops justify its higher price point relative to standard IPAs. For collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate extreme brewing, it represents strong value within the ultra-premium craft segment. Why 120 Minute IPA? The continuous hopping technique — adding high-alpha American hops nonstop throughout a two-hour boil — is a production method virtually no other commercial brewery replicates at this scale. Combined with 30 consecutive days of daily dry-hopping and an additional month aging on whole-leaf hops, the process produces a beer of extraordinary depth that evolves significantly with cellaring. A BeerAdvocate score of 92 across thousands of reviews confirms its standing as a benchmark for the extreme IPA category. In a market crowded with imperial IPAs, 120 Minute IPA remains the one that pushed the style to its outermost boundary — and earned a loyal following for doing so.
