Dominick DiMatteo, born in Sicily, founded the Chicago-area grocery store chain in 1918. The second Dominick's opened in 1934. In 1950, the DiMatteos opened their first supermarket, a 14,000-square-foot store. By 1968, the chain had reached 19 stores. The chain continued to grow through the years until its 116 stores were sold to Safeway in 1998.
