Donkey Tail, or Sedum morganianum, is native to southern Mexico and Honduras and is known for its long, trailing stems packed with plump, bead-like leaves. The soft blue-green color and cascading growth make it a standout for hanging planters or high shelves. It’s highly desirable for its texture and trailing form, but it’s delicate the leaves fall off easily with handling, so it’s best placed where it won’t be bumped. Place this plant in a south-facing window right up near the glass or within 1–2 feet, or a west-facing window as close as possible. This is a high-light plant and will stretch and thin quickly if the light is not strong enough. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned 8–10 inches from the top of the plant. If the spacing between leaves increases or stems elongate, it needs more light. Water using a chopstick or meter and let the soil dry out completely before watering again. This plant stores water in its leaves and does not tolerate staying wet. Overwatering will cause leaves to become soft and drop, while underwatering shows up as wrinkled, deflated leaves. Use a very well-draining mix, and avoid frequent handling to prevent leaf loss.
