All this and the ancient Greek belief in the sple en being the body’s repository for melancholia have been splendidly and sensually blended into the miasma of L’Entropiste’s Dorian’s Spleen. Bertrand has created a rich nocturnal gourmand that swirls with satiated desires and abandonment. It is a dark, warm thing, tactile and thickly addictive, peaty whisky, and caramelised coffee forged in ash and darkness mixed with bitter chocolate and pimento. This Aztec echo is tempered by a fragrant leathered vanilla, sweet and boozy that billows through the composition with wistful sensuality. The presence of ash and smoke are vital in Dorian’s Spleen, suggesting late night drinking dens and woozy rendezvous, time lost to sybaritic pursuits and painted wicked with forbidden pleasures. Dorian’s Spleen is a profoundly handsome scent, one thrumming and smeared with ambiguity and the many phantoms of pleasure we seek to leave behind but whose presence is a splenetic reminder we are the sum of elegiac multitudes.
