The table with a built in dough rising bin was an important part of the home because bread was a common staple in the 1800s. Dough rising tables like this one were large enough for kneading dough in the bin and holding large batches of dough while rising. The removable lid protected the dough from mice and bugs, kept warmth inside the box while the dough rose, and could be used as a tray to carry the dough to the oven. After baking, the bread could also be stored inside the bin and the table could return to its original use.
