The Douglas SBD Dauntless was the United States Navy’s premier carrier-based scout and dive bomber during the first half of World War II. Manufactured by the Douglas Aircraft Company from 1940 through 1944, this rugged, single-engine monoplane became immortalized as the aircraft that destroyed all four Japanese fleet carriers—the Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū, and Hiryū—at the pivotal Battle of Midway in June 1942, effectively turning the tide of the Pacific War. A total of 5,936 Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers (including the USAAF A-24 Banshee variant) were built between 1940 and 1944.
