The rough, rocky coastline of Appledore Island, Maine is punctuated by steap chasms dipping down to the sea. During storms and heavy surf, the water surges up through, spouting hig h up the rock walls. In calm, sunny weather, they are cool, inviting places to explore. A place to hide from the blazing sun, they frame the sparkling water below. I painted this on one such sunny day during my artist residency at the Shoals Marine Lab.
