DPTAP (1,2-dipalmitoyl-3-trimethylammonium-propane chloride) is a cationic lipid and an analogue of DOTAP. It is used for the formulation of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) to deliver D NA, RNA, oligonucleotides, and other negatively charged biomolecules. DPTAP has saturated dipalmitoyl tails (16:0), while DOTAP has unsaturated dioleoyl tails (18:1). Cationic lipids, like DPTAP, impart a positive charge to the surface of liposomes which promotes efficient interaction with negatively charged nucleic acids and the negatively charged cell membrane.
