Draba ventosa is a compact, tuft-forming perennial in the mustard family (Brassicaceae), native to high elevation alpine and subalpine regions of Europe. It forms dense cushions of small basal rosettes composed of narrow, lance-shaped to spoon-shaped gray-green leaves, often covered with fine hairs that help reduce moisture loss and protect against harsh mountain conditions. In late spring to early summer, slender flowering stems rise just above the foliage, bearing clusters of bright yellow, four-petaled flowers that provide a vivid contrast against rocky alpine landscapes. Following bloom, the plant produces small, flattened seed pods typical of the mustard family. Draba ventosa thrives in full sun and exceptionally well-drained, gritty soils, where it tolerates cold temperatures, wind, and poor, rocky substrates. Its compact growth habit, cheerful flowers, and adaptability to alpine conditions make it an excellent choice for rock gardens, alpine troughs, scree beds, and other well-drained landscape settings. Zones 3-6 Germination To germinate Draba ventosa seeds, sow them on the surface of a moist, well-draining seed-starting mix containing fine grit or sand, and press them gently into the medium without burying them deeply, as light helps promote germination. Place the container in a bright location with indirect light and maintain temperatures between 15–20°C (59–68°F). If fresh seeds do not germinate readily, cold stratify them by placing the sown container or moist seeds in a refrigerator at 1–5°C (34–41°F) for 4–6 weeks before returning them to warm conditions. Keep the growing medium consistently moist but never waterlogged and ensure good air circulation throughout the germination period. Seeds typically germinate within 2–6 weeks after suitable conditions are met. Once seedlings have developed several true leaves, transplant them carefully into individual pots with a gritty, well-drained growing mix and gradually acclimate them to full sun as they mature.
