Dragonfly traces the complete lifecycle of one of nature's most remarkable creatures — from its birth as an aquatic insect through metamorphosis, flight, and its final mating pose
in the shape of a heart. Composed at rustic Oregon cabins in 2019, Andrew Bergeron drafted the entire set in pencil on staff paper at picnic tables surrounded by old-growth forest. Each movement draws on a distinct musical tradition while pushing into fresh territory: I. Aquatic (4:22) — A northern Argentinian chacarera reimagined in an asymmetrical 11/16 meter, with flute and guitar weaving melodies in the Lydian-dominant mode. II. Molting (4:02) — Sustained double tremolo in both instruments carries the listener through a metamorphosis, shifting between G dorian and A phrygian with a 5:4 metric modulation at the turning point. III. Flying (6:27) — A fast, virtuosic dance in 7/8 inspired by Piazzolla's flute etudes, featuring flutter tongue, extended tremolo groupings, and rapid-fire arpeggios over a helicopter-like guitar figure. IV. Heartdance (6:19) — The set closes with the album's title track, a bittersweet Basque zortziko in 5 that captures the joy and fragility of the dragonfly's final hours — with flute quotes from earlier movements woven into a luminous coda. This is music for adventurous duos ready to explore odd meters, world music influences, and extended technique — with the reward of a piece that consistently connects with audiences. As Bergeron notes, "everyone seems to have a story or experience with dragonflies." I. Aquatic 4:22II. Moltin 4:02 III. Flying 6:27 IV.
