Following his 2023 exhibition at The Wadsworth Atheneum, artist Matt Paweski designed Drawing Tables (2025) for Play! Intrigued by notions of hybrid furniture, Paweski endeavored to make a pragmatic system that could be display-like and dense while simultaneously lightweight and quick to produce. Constructed from thin plywood panels and hollow aluminum legs, the tables are unified by a rich, tactile painted finish with a fetish-like attention to joinery and hardware. Each table is distinct, yet designed to combine into a connected composite pattern. A graphic cut “drawing” runs through the tabletops, generating a continuous pattern across the ensemble. Practical decisions made during fabrication such as square cutouts used to pivot the material while cutting determine the formal details of the work.
