About the Artisans Our collection of handwoven round mats are made by remote artisans from Nairai Island. This island is located within the Lomaiviti Island Group, which is well-known for their highly-skilled weaving. Historically a voyaging region, a large percentage of community members intermarried with persons from other island nations, further enriching the skilled artisan background of this island’s community. Mat weaving provides a critical and sustainable source of cash income or artisans isolated from local and international markets. Through weaving, their skills, knowledge and identities are preserved and promoted.
