Oki Sato founded Nendo in Tokyo in 2002 with a clear conviction: that design's greatest power lies in the small, almost imperceptible surprise. The Drop Bookcase, realized with Cappellini, is among the most considered expressions of that belief. The piece is a double-sided column, offering storage on both faces. Its true distinction is what happens at the top. The uppermost books and objects appear to float, held by nothing visible, as though gravity paused mid-thought. The engineering required to achieve this effect is exacting, yet nothing about the finished form announces its own effort. Cappellini has long served as a collaborator for designers whose work sits at the edge of furniture and sculpture. Drop belongs firmly in that tradition.
