Drysdale Overture is Lilburn’s first major orchestral work. It was written while he was a student under the aegis of Vaughan Williams at the Royal College of Music in London. The w ork won first prize at the New Zealand National Centennial Competition in 1940 and has more recently become established as a staple of orchestral repertoire with regular performances and recordings presented by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
