Lemna minor — Duckweed — is barely 2mm across but multiplies faster than almost any aquatic plant, forming a dense surface mat that shades algae out and strips nitrate and phosphate from the water as it goes. Duckweed is famously difficult to remove once established — a single frond left behind repopulates a tank. Add it deliberately for nutrient control or fish food, not casually as decoration. It is excellent food. Goldfish, koi, cichlids and many pond fish graze it, and it regrows faster than they can eat it. Surface flow packs it into corners where it rots. Aim filter returns downward or use a floating ring. Skim it back at every water change. Left unchecked it seals the surface and starves plants below of light.
