The peg on the sword is shaped to only insert correctly in one direction; be sure to insert the sword with the dark side of the blade facing up. If the fit seems very tight, gently use sandpaper or a file on the sword peg. Test the fit often to avoid over-sanding. If the sword connection is too loose, the fit can be tightened by brushing a small amount of super glue to the sword peg and the hand hole and allowing them to dry. Repeat as necessary to thicken the connection, do not assemble the pieces while the glue is wet unless you want the connection to be permanent.
