The price is high, but it’s well worth checking out if you’re looking for laid-back transparency, and value the low level of needle-talk.” — HI-FI CHOICE, REVIEWING THE ORIGINAL TE KAITORA A titanium-head low-output design with PCOCC copper coils, a solid boron cantilever, and Dynavector’s Pathfinder line-contact stylus The original Te Kaitora moving coil cartridge was developed through a collaboration between Dynavector Japan and Dynavector New Zealand. Its name means “The Discoverer” in Māori, while Rua identifies this improved model as the second version. The Te Kaitora Rua incorporates technology developed for Dynavector cartridges including the XV-1s and XX-2. It retains the original model’s open, silk-like treble while introducing a revised coil, headpiece, armature, and magnetic circuit intended to deliver smoother and more linear performance. PCOCC Copper Coils For the Rua, Dynavector replaced the original Te Kaitora’s silver coil wire with PCOCC copper. The change is intended to produce smoother, more musical performance while preserving the responsiveness of the lightweight moving assembly. Rigid Titanium Headpiece The titanium headpiece provides a rigid mounting platform for the cartridge’s generator. A miniature stainless steel bolt couples the front and rear yokes to the magnetic circuit assembly, strengthening the connection between the cartridge’s mechanical and magnetic structures. M2.5 threaded mounting holes are incorporated into the headpiece, allowing the cartridge to be installed using the supplied screws without separate mounting nuts. Solid Boron Cantilever and Pathfinder Stylus The Te Kaitora Rua uses a 6 mm-long, 0.3 mm-diameter solid boron cantilever fitted with Dynavector’s Pathfinder line-contact stylus. This stylus profile, also used on the XV-1s and XX-2, has contact radii of 7 × 30 microns for precise tracing of fine groove modulations. Advanced Magnetic Circuit A square armature operates within a matching square aperture in the front yoke, producing a more linear distribution of magnetic flux. High-flux-density Alnico magnets work with Dynavector’s flux damper to control the magnetic circuit and reduce distortion.
