Optional to use. Helps in case of old, worn out or custom portafilter. If Portafilter locks in too far to the right you might install paper shim. It will make gasket "thicker" and portafilter will lock-in earlier, more towards the left side. Paper Shim is installed before the gasket. Paper should face group head and not touch portafilter.
