This very fine amulet is hand-carved from carnelian in the form of a bird, the head upright and facing forward, with legs tucked underneath its body, the delicate crosshatching acr oss its back indicating feathers. Birds played a vital role in the lives of the ancient Egyptians and were such a focus of religion and culture that they were mummified as offerings at temples. Dimensions: Length: 1/2 inch (12 mm) Condition: Intact and in excellent condition overall. Pierced longitudinally for attachment. Provenance: Acquired in Egypt by Goddard Du Bois (b. 1869 – d. 1925) and Josephine Cook Du Bois (b. 1864 – d. 1961), New York between 1900 and 1907, exhibited Metropolitan Museum of Art between 1920-1948 # 45.930 (part).
