Koholā (Humpback Whales) Like some species of birds that winter in the islands, humpback whales (koholā in Hawaiian) make long seasonal migrations to Hawaiʻi. Beginning in November , whales arrive in the Hawaiian Islands and will spend the winter calving and breeding in near-shore waters. They can grow to be 50 feet long (15 m) and weigh up to 40 tons (36,000 kg).
