'Earth Elder' is part of the Wise Women Gathering series, and represent women at various significant ages in their lives. The sculptures celebrate the beauty of all women – their sensual curves, inner strength and grace. The women’s beaded necklaces and traditional tribal hairstyles weaved their way through from my African heritage and place of birth. This series was inspired during a yoga trek on the Laripinta Trail in the Northern Territory, where I spent treasured time exploring the sacred land with close girlfriends, a culturally diverse group of women. My sculptural artworks are hand coiled then sprayed with my signature ash glaze which I make with the ash from my fireplace at home. The spraying of the glaze deliberately mimics the effect achieved by wood-firing, thereby enhancing the shape and movement of my sculptural pieces. The graceful lines and organic surfaces reflect my love of sensory exploration and movement, and invites viewers to engage in a tactile response. Size: 50cmH x 26cmW x 24cmD
