The white flowers bloom in early spring and are followed by small, dark-purple fruits that are edible and can be used to make jams, jellies, and pies. The bark is dark gray, and the wood is solid and durable. Eastern sand cherry is generally easy to grow and tolerate a wide range of soil types, preferring moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade.
