We have observed batteries with bypassed or charge-only BMS setups capable of delivering over 700 amps with little or no effective protection. Circuit breakers and fuses are critical components that protect your bike’s electrical system from overloads and short circuits. Every controller must be paired with an appropriate circuit breaker or fuse to ensure safe and proper functioning. Removing or bypassing the circuit breaker or fuse can lead to serious damage—to your bike, property, or both—and will void the warranty on all products. Battery bypass is not recommended. Bypassing the battery disables critical protection mechanisms and offers little to no real-world power gains. The controller is engineered to work seamlessly with your bike’s stock battery and BMS (Battery Management System), delivering enhanced performance without compromising safety. If you are using an aftermarket battery, you must install an appropriately rated circuit breaker or fuse to protect the system against overcurrent events. Failure to do so may result in electrical failure, fire hazards, or permanent damage to your components, and will void the warranty on all products. As each setup varies, we strongly recommend consulting a qualified professional to determine the correct circuit breaker or fuse rating for your specific battery. STOCK BIKES SurRon Light Bee: BMS overcurrent protection + circuit breaker Talaria MX3 / MX4: BMS overcurrent protection + circuit breaker Talaria XXX: BMS overcurrent protection + internal fuse (inside battery) Talaria MX5: BMS overcurrent protection + internal fuse (inside battery) SurRon Ultra Bee: BMS + fuse Eride Circuit Breaker Models: BMS overcurrent protection+circuit breaker+fuse Eride Non Circuit Breaker Models: BMS overcurrent protection+fuse Rerode R1: BMS overcurrent protection + circuit breaker Most bikes come equipped with both a BMS and either a fuse or circuit breaker. Even when upgrading or modifying your bike, maintaining a properly rated fuse or circuit breaker and keeping the BMS active and un-bypassed is essential for ensuring long-term reliability, safety, and optimal performance. Fuse Selection: The Manufacturer recommennd using an ANN or ANL fuse with an appropriate rating for the system: For most systems capable of delivering 500-600A DC, a 200A to 250A fuse is typically suitable. The lower the fuse rating the better – they have successfully pulled over 500A DC on a 250A ANL fuse without issue. Please refer to the fuse manufacturer’s specifications or fuse chart to select the correct fuse size for your specific application. This guidance is provided to help ensure customer safety, controller longevity, and continued warranty protection. Circuit Breaker Selection: If a circuit breaker is used in place of a fuse, it must meet the following criteria: Must be DC-Rated (not AC only) Must be C-Curve or D-Curve Trip curve timing must match the system demands Important examples: The stock SurRonn 100A breaker will tolerate peaks of 420-430A before tripping. A typical 125A breaker can handle up to 500A peak. For small bike platforms, circuit breakers above 125A are often physically too large, making a fuse the only practical solution. Always refer to the circuit breaker manufacturer’s tripping curves and datasheets to select the correct unit for the application.
