Echinocactus grusonii is arguably one of the most famous cacti in the world, known for its perfect globe shape and symmetrical rows of sharp, golden-yellow spines. It is an extremely slow-growing species, taking many years to reach a significant size, which makes mature specimens highly prized. Often humorously called the "Mother-in-Law's Cushion," it is a formidable plant with rigid thorns that act as a strong defence. This desert native demands a spot with full sun to maintain its round shape; shade will cause it to stretch and become misshapen. Plant it in a very gritty, mineral-heavy soil mix to mimic its arid natural environment, ensuring the medium dries out rapidly after every watering. Water very sparingly and never let the plant sit in a saucer of standing water.
