Echinocactus platyacanthusEchinocactus platyacanthus is a massive barrel cactus that begins life as a compact grey-green globe. Strong vertical ribs divide the body into deep folds , each lined with woolly areoles and stout brown to grey spines. The crown becomes pale and woolly with age, setting a soft centre against the heavy ribbed surface.Growth is slow, but the change in proportion is considerable. Young plants remain rounded and fit easily in a pot; very old specimens become tall, broad columns and rank among the largest barrel cacti. The ribs increase in number and become more pronounced as the body expands. Mature plants may form a ring of small yellow flowers around the woolly top, followed by dry fruits hidden in the crown.
