A mid season pure bittersweet cider apple. Small and round, rich yellow with orange patches and some light russet. Sweet, rich, aromatic with a high red colour juice. Has been used as a single variety. Can be stored until December. Will soften but retains its juice. According to Hogg it was raised from seed by Mr William Hill of Lower Eggleton, Herefordshire about 1847. To quote: ‘This apple is second early, and is so sweet and aromatic, as to be very attractive to hares, rabbits, fouls, blackbirds and fieldfares, who will choose it in preference to all others.’ You have been warned!
