A Dutch Family in Japanese Java Written by Dieuwke Wendelaar Bonga Eldest girl of eight children, the author was raised in a teacher’s family in Surakarta, Java, in what is now Indonesia. The family was split up when the Japanese imprisoned the father and a brother in men’s camps leaving the author, her mother and five younger siblings in the women’s camp. The remaining family was bounced from camp to camp, eight in total, while their lives gradually deteriorated from early days of fear and crowding to an existence of near starvation, forced labour, and beatings. They saw others just disappear or die.
