Eixample, Catalan for expansion or expansion district. An area built in the 19th and 20th centuries within Barcelona between the Ciutat Vella and the surrounding small towns of San ts, Gracia and others. It is characterized by long straight streets, a grid pattern crossed by wide avenues and octagonal blocks designed by Ildefons Cerdà that transform each intersection into a small urban space for better ventilation, visibility and parking.
