Earrings became popular in Egypt during the 18th Dynasty, and were probably adopted from their southern neighbours in Nubia. Of considerable variety in both design and material men , women and children of both sexes wore earrings during the New Kingdom. This rare pair of penannular earrings are each hand carved from a single piece of creamy alabaster, then carefully polished. They demonstrate one of the most expensive variety of hoop earring worn by members of the noble and royal families.
