When the photographer, Mervyn Sequeria, captured the battle between a Canada goose and a bald eagle (American Eagle), I saw an analogous story between the avian battle and the current political strife, and I was moved to depict the moment on canvas. My painting is set at Waterton Lakes National Park along the border between Canada and the US. The cracks in the earth depict fractures between our countries and growing divisions in the US, between citizens and their government. Elbows Up honours the 158 years since the Canadian Confederation, and I have released 158 Reproductions on 100% Cotton Rag and finished with a matte varnish. So if you frame the print, you don't have to add glass, unless you want to. The original painting of "Elbows Up" was auctioned in July 2025 and sold for $50,000, with all proceeds benefiting Easter Seals Charity. In the summer of 2025, the US president passed a bill titled One Big Beautiful Bill, and I was astonished that a sitting president, the most powerful figure in the world, couldn’t come up with a worthy title that reflects his position.
