In magical practice, elderberries are tied to ancestor work and otherworld contact. They are associated with the Great Goddess in her dual aspect, holding both fertility and death without contradiction. Elder groves were considered liminal spaces, places where the veil thins, particularly around midsummer. The berries themselves carry protective and transformative qualities. Carried on the body, they act as a ward against unwanted influence. Used in ritual drink, they support communication with ancestors and the dead.
