An Electro-Mechanical Door Interlock, or EMDL, is a safety lock that prevents the hoistway door (hall door) from opening if the elevator is not at that landing. The EMDL is mounted on the frame of the hoistway door and ensures the door to the elevator is safely closed before the elevator can be operated. The EMDL also prevents the door from being opened when it is not safe to do so (elevator is not at that floor, or is in use).
